Santa Fe sprang to mind almost immediately for us once our engagement fever had run its course.

Nestled around 7000' feet in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, the Santa Fe area has been inhabited for thousands of years by indigenous tribes who established pueblos up and down the Rio Grande, a key source of water and transportation. Much later, in 1607, the current city of Santa Fe was founded by the Spanish as the capital of their colonial province, and it remains the oldest and highest capital city in the US today.

Since, the town has become a gateway to the incredible beauty and wonder of the American Southwest, drawing the attention of artists from around the world. Sarah's father, Mike McMullen, is one of the many artists that have felt the pull of Santa Fe over the years. Beloved for its incredible changing light and rugged, high-contrast landscapes, photographers like Mike have made the city and its surroundings a regular subject since the advent of the camera.

McMullen family vacations often included lengthy detours to examine and photograph rock outcroppings, ghostly ruins and years of Spanish and Puebloan architectural influence, and it was on these trips that Sarah began to fall in love with Santa Fe.

As we looked at wedding venues across California and the Southwest, it didn't take us long to start wondering about Santa Fe, a halfway point between Los Angeles and our family homes. We wanted somewhere our guests could really enjoy for a few days - a place they could walk around, that had good food to eat, art to look at and nature to enjoy.

Santa Fe started to check all the boxes, and after our first chat with the lovely folks at the La Fonda, we knew we weren't going to get married anywhere else.
